Word of mouth isn't dead — it just changed messengers

You often hear that word of mouth belongs to the past and that everything now plays out online. We don't quite agree: word of mouth is doing very well. It has simply stopped going through a human being.

When the neighbour becomes an artificial intelligence

In the past, to find a plumber or an electrician, you asked a neighbour, a colleague, someone from the neighbourhood. Today, more and more people go about it the same way, but with their phone: “find me a good plumber in Geneva”, “a reliable electrician near me”. And the artificial intelligence answers, drawing on whatever it can find about you online: your website, your Google reviews, your presence on social media.

The principle hasn't really changed. You still ask advice from someone you trust — except that someone is sometimes a voice assistant rather than a friend. And just as a neighbour who doesn't know you won't recommend you, an AI that finds nothing about you won't either.

The new reflex among clients in French-speaking Switzerland

This is exactly where the shoe pinches for many tradespeople and independents in French-speaking Switzerland. Many of them built their entire client base on referrals and word of mouth — the good old “I had someone good for that”. It still works, and it always will. But on its own it is no longer enough.

A growing share of clients now put their questions straight to a machine, without even thinking about it, almost by reflex. And if you don't appear in the results it offers, you simply don't exist for those people.

It isn't a question of fashion or of following a trend. It's simply that the conversation about you now also takes place elsewhere — and you aren't necessarily invited to it.

A tradesperson who is invisible online stays an invisible tradesperson

The good news is that it doesn't take much to put things right. You don't need a website costing several thousand francs, or a complicated strategy. A simple, clear site with your contact details, your trade and your service area is already enough to give an AI something to recommend the day someone asks it for “the best tradesperson around”.

That is also what makes all the difference between a tradesperson the AI can cite with confidence and one it ignores, for lack of any reliable information to go on.

Building a website: the foundation for existing in the eyes of AI

Whether you are a tradesperson in Geneva, in the canton of Vaud, in Fribourg, in Valais, in Neuchâtel or in the Jura, a professional website is no longer a luxury reserved for large companies: it has become the minimum calling card for being found, understood and recommended anywhere in French-speaking Switzerland — whether by a neighbour or by an artificial intelligence.

At Atelier Web Romand, we help tradespeople and independents across French-speaking Switzerland build simple, clear and effective websites, designed to be easy to find online.

Your human network still matters — complete it with the right tool

The neighbour will keep recommending you, and so much the better: that bond of trust stays precious and nothing really replaces it. But you may as well make sure the phone does the same.
